7 Honduran Dishes to Try on Your Next Trip to Roatan

Hey there, beach bums and flavor chasers! If you’re planning an escape to the tropical paradise of Roatan, get ready for a culinary adventure like no other. This little slice of heaven off the coast of Honduras is not just a stunner when it comes to natural beauty – it’s also a gastronomic hub.

From traditional Honduran dishes passed down for generations to fusion flavors that blend local ingredients with international influences, there’s a world of deliciousness waiting for your taste buds to explore.

So, grab a fork (or your hands, we don’t judge!), and let’s dive into some must-try Honduran food that will make your Roatan vacation even more unforgettable.

The Honduras National Dish – Baleada

A close-up image of a baleada, a traditional Honduran dish. The baleada consists of a flour tortilla folded in half, filled with scrambled eggs, refried beans, a drizzle of sour cream, and sprinkled with crumbled cheese. The tortilla is lightly toasted, and the filling ingredients are visible inside. The baleada is presented on a white plate.

Baleada, one of Honduras’s national dishes, is a humble yet incredibly satisfying street food that has become a staple in the country’s culinary landscape, and for good reason.

The true beauty of Baleada lies in its simplicity. At its core, the Baleada is thick, fluffy flour or corn tortillas, folded and filled with refried, mashed beans and cheese or sour cream.

However, you can get more creative and add other ingredients like creamy avocado, crumbled pickled onions, your choice of protein, such as scrambled eggs, chorizo, fried pork, carne asada, or ground beef, and a drizzle of creamy mantequilla (butter).

Where to Grab a Bite

There are many Honduran restaurants along our little island, but for a specifically authentic Baleada experience, head to Yahongreh in Half Moon Bay or Calelu’s in West End. Another authentic option to try out Baleadas is at any of the Petrosun Gas Stations!

The Iconic Plato Típico

A top-down view of a traditional Honduran "Plato Típico" served on a large banana leaf. The dish includes grilled beef and chicken, fried plantains, slices of avocado, a portion of white rice, refried beans, and grilled vegetables.

Another of our favorite Honduran dishes that encapsulates the essence of Honduran cuisine is the beloved plato típico. This hearty plate is one of the typical dishes you’ll see at most eateries, but it’s not one you’ll want to pass up! This dish is like a warm, comforting hug from an abuela – a true taste of home for locals and a delightful introduction to traditional flavors for visitors.

At its core, the plato típico consists of rice and beans, carne asada (grilled steak), or pollo asado (grilled or fried chicken).

But wait, there’s more!

The plato típico often comes with additional sides like flour or corn tortillas, chimol (a zesty tomato sauce made with chopped tomatoes, onions, and green bell peppers, similar to pico de gallo!), green plantains, and sometimes even a fried egg on top.

Honduran Pupusas: Pockets of Flavor and Tradition

The pupusas are golden brown from being toasted on a griddle. Accompanying the pupusas on the plate is a serving of fresh coleslaw made with shredded cabbage, carrots, onions, and green chili peppers, adding a colorful and crunchy contrast to the dish. The plate is set on a light-colored surface, enhancing the vibrant colors of the food.

If you’re a fan of savory, handheld treats, you’ll love Honduran “Pupusas.”

These thick, stuffed corn cakes are a beloved staple in Honduran cuisine, with each bite celebrating flavor and tradition.

The soft, slightly crispy exterior gives way to a warm, gooey filling of savory ingredients like refried beans, queso fresco (fresh cheese), chicharrón (crispy pork), or loroco (a fragrant edible flower).
