Ultimate Roatan Diving Guide

Sites, Tours & Local Tips

Roatan is one of the premier scuba diving destinations in the Caribbean, offering world-class underwater adventures for beginners and experienced divers. Located along the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef – the second-largest barrier reef system in the world – Roatan has vibrant coral reefs, wall dives, and exciting shark dives just minutes from shore.

Thanks to year-round warm waters, excellent visibility, and diverse marine life, Roatan has become the perfect destination for all types of water activities, including snorkeling, open water courses, and deep dives. Whether you’re diving for the first time or returning for your 100th logged dive, this Honduran island is extraordinary below the surface.

Many divers fly into Roatan or nearby hubs like La Ceiba and San Pedro Sula, with direct flights available from several U.S. cities. From West End to Sandy Bay, you’ll find countless dive shops, boutique dive centers, and private docks ready to launch your next adventure.

Let’s explore some of the best dive sites Roatan has to offer and what makes diving in Roatan so unforgettable.

Top Dive Sites in Roatan

Mary’s Place

One of Roatan’s most iconic dive sites, Mary’s Place is known for its lava-formed crevices, vertical walls, and soft coral overhangs that make for otherworldly swim-throughs. The narrow cuts in the reef feel like underwater canyons, usually glowing with shafts of sunlight that create a magical effect. It’s also a hotspot for macro life, making it a favorite for underwater photographers and experienced divers.

  • Depth: 40–110 ft
  • Best for: Experienced divers, deep dive certified
  • Wildlife: Reef fish, nudibranchs, sponges, and occasional eagle rays

El Aguila Wreck

The El Aguila (“The Eagle”) is a 230-foot shipwreck that was intentionally sunk in 1997. Resting at approximately 100 feet of depth, it’s now home to moray eels, giant groupers, and swirling schools of jacks. Over time, the wreck has broken into three large sections, creating unique swim-throughs and hiding spots for marine life.

  • Depth: ~100 ft
  • Best for: Advanced divers, wreck diving enthusiasts
  • Highlights: Massive hull, swim-throughs, coral-covered structure

Cara a Cara (Shark Dive)

Translating to “Face to Face,” Cara a Cara is a thrilling close encounter with Caribbean reef sharks. Under the watchful eye of dive professionals, you’ll descend to a sandy bottom where nurse sharks and reef sharks swim just feet away. The dive is highly controlled and conducted with conservation in mind, giving divers a respectful and inspiring view of these apex predators.

  • Depth: ~70 ft
  • Best for: Confident recreational divers
  • Safety: Strict protocols, offered by certified dive centers only

Turtle Crossing

As the name suggests, Turtle Crossing is a hotspot for green and hawksbill turtles. This shallow dive has large coral formations, sponges, and a stunning variety of reef fish. You’ll often find turtles lazily gliding through the water or resting on coral heads, giving you up-close encounters in a relaxed setting.

  • Depth: 30–60 ft
  • Best for: All levels, great for open water divers
  • Wildlife: Turtles, parrotfish, butterflyfish, and cleaner shrimp

Spooky Channel

A favorite among experienced divers, Spooky Channel is a deep underwater trench with cathedral-like lighting and mysterious drop-offs. It’s a top site for spotting macro life, including seahorses and blennies. Formed by an ancient riverbed, the channel has a unique geological structure unlike anywhere else on the island. With towering walls and narrow passageways, it feels like swimming through a submerged canyon.

  • Depth: 40–100 ft
  • Best for: Advanced divers, confident in limited visibility
  • Bonus: Often visited on night dives for a totally different vibe
